Window Tinting FAQs

Browse our comprehensive FAQ organized by topic. Click any question to reveal the answer.

Basics

Most vehicles can be completed in 2-4 hours, depending on the number of windows and tint type.

We recommend waiting 3-5 days before rolling down your windows to allow the tint to fully cure.

When professionally installed with quality film, window tint should not significantly impact night visibility. We help you choose the right shade for your needs.

Tint Types & Technology

Ceramic window tint uses ceramic particles that block infrared heat without using metal or dye. It's the premium choice because it offers superior heat rejection, won't fade or discolor, doesn't interfere with electronics, and provides the clearest visibility. We install Solar Gard ceramic film exclusively, with our nano-ceramic tier blocking up to 88% of infrared heat.

We offer three Solar Gard ceramic tiers: Ceramic (from $199) with strong heat rejection, Premium Ceramic (from $249) with enhanced heat rejection and clarity, and Nano-Ceramic (from $349) with up to 88% infrared rejection and maximum clarity. All three include a lifetime warranty and block up to 99% of UV rays.

Yes, especially in Toronto's hot summers. Ceramic tint blocks far more infrared heat than basic dyed films. You'll notice a significant difference in interior comfort, reduced A/C usage, and no signal interference. The lifetime warranty also makes it a long-term investment.

Nano-ceramic is a more advanced ceramic technology that uses smaller, more refined ceramic particles. This allows for higher heat rejection (up to 88% infrared) while maintaining excellent visibility. Our top-tier Solar Gard nano-ceramic film delivers maximum performance and clarity.

All three use Solar Gard ceramic film and carry a lifetime warranty. Ceramic ($199) delivers strong everyday heat rejection. Premium Ceramic ($249) steps up heat rejection and optical clarity and is our most popular choice. Nano-Ceramic ($349) provides the highest heat rejection (up to 88% IR) and the clearest visibility for ultimate performance.

We install Solar Gard ceramic film exclusively because it outperforms dyed and carbon films on heat rejection, color stability, and longevity. Dyed films can fade or turn purple, and carbon offers less heat rejection than ceramic. Standardizing on ceramic lets us back every install with a lifetime warranty.

Metallic tint contains small metallic particles that reflect heat and provide a shiny appearance. While effective for heat rejection, metallic tints can interfere with GPS, cell phones, and radio signals. We don't offer metallic tints because our Solar Gard ceramic options provide better heat rejection without signal interference.

Modern vehicles rely heavily on wireless signals for GPS, toll transponders, satellite radio, and cellular connectivity. Metallic tints interfere with these signals. Our Solar Gard ceramic films provide equal or better heat rejection without any interference, making them the smarter choice.

Crystalline film is a nearly invisible tint that blocks heat without darkening your windows. It's ideal for those who want heat rejection without changing their vehicle's appearance, or for front windows where dark tint isn't legal. We can source clear ceramic film upon request.

Yes! Clear ceramic films block significant heat and UV rays while appearing nearly invisible. This is perfect for front windshield strips, front door windows where legal limits apply, or if you simply prefer your vehicle's original appearance. Contact us for clear ceramic options.

Tint Darkness Levels (VLT)

VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission - the percentage of light that passes through the tint. Lower VLT means darker tint: 5% is very dark (limo tint), 20% is dark, 35% is medium, 50% is light, and 70% appears almost clear. Ontario requires front side windows to allow 70%+ light.

Limo tint refers to very dark film, typically 5% VLT, that allows minimal light through. In Ontario, limo tint is only legal on rear side windows and the back windshield. Front side windows must be 70%+ VLT. We install limo tint legally on rear windows for maximum privacy.

In Ontario, front side windows must allow 70%+ VLT (visible light transmission). There are no restrictions on rear side windows or back windshield - you can go as dark as 5% (limo tint). The front windshield can only have a tint strip at the top.

This depends on your priorities. For privacy and heat rejection, 20% on rear windows is popular. For a balanced look, 35% works well. If you frequently drive at night, consider 35-50% for better visibility. We recommend matching darkness levels across all eligible windows for a clean look.

Yes! Many customers choose darker tint on rear windows (20%) and lighter tint on front doors (35% or legal limit). This provides privacy in the back while maintaining visibility up front. We help you design a setup that looks cohesive.

Ontario Legal & Compliance

In Ontario, the front windshield can have a tint strip at the top, and front side windows must allow more than 70% of light through. Rear windows and back windshield can be any darkness.

Ontario law allows a tint strip at the top of the windshield (typically 6 inches from the AS-1 line). Full windshield tinting is not legal on public roads. We ensure all installations comply with Ontario regulations.

If your front windows don't meet the 70% VLT requirement, you can receive a fine. Police can measure your tint with a meter during traffic stops. All our installations comply with Ontario law, and we document the VLT level for your records.

If pulled over, police can issue a fine and require you to remove the illegal tint. To avoid this, we only install Ontario-legal tint on front windows. Rear windows have no restrictions, so you can go as dark as you'd like there.

Full windshield tinting isn't legal in Ontario, but a tint strip at the top (AS-1 line) is allowed. Windshield strips reduce glare from the sun and are popular additions. Clear ceramic film can also be applied to legal areas for heat rejection without darkening.

Vehicle-Specific Applications

Yes! We specialize in Tesla window tinting including Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. Tesla's large glass roofs benefit significantly from ceramic tint for heat rejection. We use precision pre-cut templates for exact fit on all Tesla models.

Electric vehicles like Tesla, BMW iX, and Rivian benefit more from heat-rejecting tint because less A/C usage means more range. We recommend ceramic tint for EVs to maximize efficiency. The installation process is the same as any vehicle.

Absolutely! SUVs often have more glass area, making heat rejection even more important. We tint all SUVs including the rear hatch/liftgate window. Large SUVs and crossovers are some of our most common installations.

Yes, we tint pickup trucks of all sizes - from F-150s and Silverados to RAM trucks. Extended cab, crew cab, and regular cab configurations all benefit from tinting for heat rejection and privacy.

Yes! Sunroof and panoramic roof tinting is highly recommended for heat rejection. Large glass roofs let in significant solar heat - ceramic tint can block up to 88% of this infrared energy, dramatically improving comfort.

Yes! Sunroof tinting is available and highly recommended for additional heat and UV protection. It's especially beneficial for vehicles with large panoramic sunroofs that let in excessive heat.

Yes! We offer individual window tinting if your rear windows are already tinted (factory or aftermarket) and you just need the front doors done. This is common for vehicles with privacy glass from the factory.

Factory 'privacy glass' is tinted during manufacturing but provides minimal heat rejection - it's mostly for appearance. Aftermarket tint (what we install) blocks significant heat and UV rays. Many customers add ceramic film over factory tint for better performance.

Cost & Investment

Window tinting costs vary based on vehicle size and film type. Our Solar Gard ceramic tiers start from $199 (Ceramic), $249 (Premium Ceramic), and $349 (Nano-Ceramic) for most vehicles. Contact us for an exact quote for your vehicle.

All of our window tint is ceramic. Pricing starts from $199 for our Ceramic tier, $249 for Premium Ceramic, and $349 for Nano-Ceramic, with final pricing based on vehicle size. Every tier includes a lifetime warranty, no signal interference, and strong heat rejection.

Cheap tint usually means lower-quality dyed film that will fade, bubble, or turn purple within 1-2 years. Professional installation with quality Solar Gard ceramic film costs more upfront but lasts for years with lifetime warranty protection.

Yes! Window tinting protects your interior from UV damage (preserving resale value), reduces A/C usage (saving fuel/electricity), increases privacy and security, and improves comfort. Premium tint with lifetime warranty can easily outlast vehicle ownership.

Care & Maintenance

Keep windows rolled up for 3-5 days after installation to allow proper curing. Wait at least one week before cleaning. Use soft cloths and ammonia-free cleaners only. Avoid abrasive materials that can scratch the film.

No! Windex and most glass cleaners contain ammonia, which degrades window film over time. Use ammonia-free cleaners specifically designed for tinted windows, or simply use mild soap and water with a soft microfiber cloth.

Use ammonia-free glass cleaner or mild soap and water. Spray on a soft microfiber cloth (not directly on the window) and wipe gently. Avoid abrasive materials, paper towels, and automatic car wash brushes on interior glass.

Exterior car washes are fine since tint is applied to the inside of windows. However, avoid interior detailing services that use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials on your windows for the first month after installation.

Common Problems & Solutions

Bubbling and peeling are caused by poor quality film, improper installation, or using household window film on vehicles. Our professional-grade films and certified installation techniques prevent these issues, backed by our warranty.

Purple discoloration occurs in cheap dyed films as UV exposure breaks down the dye. This doesn't happen with our Solar Gard ceramic films because they don't use dye. All of our ceramic tiers are guaranteed against discoloration.

Yes, window tint can be professionally removed. However, our consultation process ensures you're happy with your shade selection before installation. We provide tint samples and recommendations based on your preferences.

Our Solar Gard ceramic films are color-stable and won't fade, purple, or turn brown over time. We use dye-free ceramic technology that maintains its appearance for the life of your vehicle. This is backed by our lifetime warranty.

Small water bubbles immediately after installation are normal and will disappear within 1-2 weeks as the film cures. This is called 'hazing' and is part of the curing process. Larger bubbles or bubbles that appear months later indicate a problem.

Window tint actually helps hold shattered glass together in an accident, reducing injury risk. If your window breaks, the tint must be replaced along with the glass. Most insurance policies cover tint replacement with glass claims.

Warranty & Coverage

We offer a lifetime warranty against bubbling, peeling, and discoloration on all of our Solar Gard ceramic window tint.

Yes! Our warranty follows the vehicle, not the owner. This adds value when selling your car because the new owner inherits the remaining warranty coverage. We provide documentation you can pass on.

Technical Performance

Yes! All our window films block 99%+ of harmful UV rays, protecting your skin and preventing interior fading, cracking, and sun damage. This is especially important for leather seats and dashboards.

Yes! Window tinting reduces heat loss in winter by reflecting interior heat back into the vehicle. It also blocks harmful UV rays year-round, preventing interior fading even during Ontario's winter months.

Not with ceramic tinting. Our Solar Gard ceramic films use non-metallic technology, so there's zero interference with GPS, cell phones, radio, or toll transponders.

No. Window tint is applied separately from defroster lines and doesn't affect their function. Our installers are careful to work around defroster wires on rear windows without damaging them.

Customization & Selection

Yes! If you're adding tint to additional windows or replacing damaged tint, we can match your existing shade. Bring your vehicle in and we'll find the closest match using our tint samples.

We help you choose based on your priorities: heat rejection, privacy, appearance, and Ontario legal limits. During consultation, we show you samples on your vehicle so you can see exactly how each shade looks before committing.

Absolutely! During your consultation, we hold sample films against your windows so you can see exactly how each VLT level looks. This takes the guesswork out of choosing and ensures you love the result.

Leased Vehicles

Window tinting protects the interior from UV damage, which is important when returning a leased vehicle. It also improves comfort during your lease term and can be a selling point if you buy out the lease.

Most leasing companies don't require tint removal if it's professionally installed and within legal limits. Some premium brands like BMW and Mercedes even offer factory tint options. Check your lease agreement, but tint removal is rarely required.

Brands & Quality

We use Solar Gard window films, a premium brand from Saint-Gobain known for quality and performance. Solar Gard offers excellent heat rejection, optical clarity, and industry-leading warranties. Their nano-ceramic series provides up to 88% infrared rejection.

Solar Gard is one of the top professional-grade window film brands, alongside names like 3M, XPEL, and LLumar. They're known for advanced ceramic technology, color stability, and comprehensive warranties. We chose Solar Gard for its combination of performance and value.
